Gynecomastia, or the development of male breasts, is a common condition that affects nearly half of all men over the course of their lives. Estimates suggest that 40 to 60 percent of the male population have experienced an increase of breast tissue to varying degrees.
Although there is no definite known cause of gynecomastia, breast tissue can be formed due to weight gain, hormonal increases or genetics. Excess tissue can be present unilaterally (in one breast) or bilaterally (both breasts). Whatever the cause of excess male breast tissue, removing the excess tissue and reshaping the chest will create a slimmer more masculine contour.

Excess localized fat at the breast is usually caused by an issue with testosterone levels, leading to more estrogen in the body. Excess brest skin occurs after significant weight loss, weight fluctuation or the body’s aging process.
Excess glandular tissue development is a condition that causes boys’ and men’s breasts to swell and become larger than normal. It is most common in teenage boys and older men. This can be very distressing for young men in particular, affecting their self confidence.

The procedure for male breast reduction will vary depending on the amount of tissue that will be removed and whether the enlargement is caused by fatty deposits or by glandular tissue or a combination of both.
The procedure is performed under anesthetic which is administered prior to surgery. Dr. Wali begins by creating tiny incisions that are designed to be hidden by the sculpted contours of the chest. For cases in which only fat is being removed he will insert a thin cannula through the incision and liposuction the targeted fatty areas surrounding the breast muscle. For cases in which he is removing both fatty tissue as well as glandular tissue he creates incisions around the natural curve of the nipple and removes the excess glandular tissue before finishing with liposculpture of the breast.
Dr. Wali always finishes with a flat, sculpted masculine male breast. The final result is a firmer chest with more sculpted contours and stronger lines.
After surgery Dr. Wali is careful to apply dressing and bandages at the incision sites. A compression garment is suggested to keep swelling down and to encourage the contouring process during recovery.
The length of recovery will depend on the degree of surgery and each individual’s response to the procedure. You should plan on taking it easy for the first week but most men report returning to normal daily activities in about a week. Although the results of breast reduction surgery are permanent, weight gain will potentially affect the breast area by settling where the fat has been removed. However, glandular tissue will never return after removal.
